About Us
GEMSTAR, the Ocean Kite, is a large-scale technology for the generation of electricity from slow-moving flows of water, namely river, tidal or water currents in general.
Thanks to an innovative design, it is unique among renewable energy generators.
An Italian excellence, developed over the last decade, which combines competitiveness and environmental sustainability offering a clean and efficient solution on both the national and international market.
The first studies were carried out at the University of Naples “Federico II” by the ADAG research group under the direction of Prof. Domenico Coiro. Focused on overcoming the obsolete technology widespread at a prototype or pre-industrial level, the GEMSTAR has one goal: to produce as much electricity as possible at the lowest possible costs - and in an environmental friendly and reliable way.
By focusing resources and outstanding know – how, GEMSTAR is strongly competitive on the highly regulated and competitive energy market, typically distinguished by environmental uncertainty and where on going technology is strongly demanded.

The Gemstar Project
GEMSTAR consists of two counter-rotating turbines, mounted on the sides of a submerged structure that contains the electronic components. The tail planes guarantee longitudinal and lateral-directional stability and the whole system is capable of continuously aligning itself to the flow even during the tide inversion.
GEMSTAR is held in position, at the desired depth, by means of an tethering system to the bottom consisting of a winch, an anchoring screw in the seabed and a mooring cable.
Thanks to the possibility of choosing the operational depth, GEMSTAR will always intercept the best quality of the current flow and its maximum velocity on the site, also allowing the vessel pass trough
During operation, GEMSTAR behaves like a sort of submarine kite that remains fixed thanks to the balance between the thrust acting on the turbine and the structure, and buoyancy force of the hollow part of the structure.
For maintenance , GEMSTAR can be brought to the surface releasing the tension of the mooring line; also, an heading direction control system avoids the uncontrolled rotation around the vertical axis and the related possible excessive twisting of the mooring and power cables.

Why Gemstar
Placed in a dominant position compared to international competitors, GEMSTAR overcomes the blocking elements that characterize the obsolete prototypes offered on the European and global market.
Reliability and efficiency
By being able to adjust the operating depth, GEMSTAR is always positioned below the water column affected by waves and storms and therefore intercepting the fastest currents in order to maximize annual energy production.
Easy installation and inexpensive maintence
Gemstar overcomes a high number of difficulties faced by traditional installing systems thanks to the single point mooring system technology thus increasing the number of suitable installation sites worldwide.
No visual
impact
Gemstar is completely immersed, therefore it does not determine any visual or landscape impact and is by no means an obstacle to marine navigation
Safety features
Possible interferences with ship traffic are practically avoided thanks system’s ability to set its operative depth through the mooring cable and the winch.
Business opportunities
GEMSTAR technology can be easily customized on the basis of the requirements of each installation representing a large market opportunity for EU industries.
